The Real Jungle Experience!
"Dull" will never be a word my girlfriend or I will use to describe this trip.
The house is simple, yet perfect for the type of setting you are in. Pictures and this review doesn't really do it the justice it deserves. Part of the beauty of this place, besides the obvious of just being in that type of environment, is the feeling it leaves you with. I know this place will be connected with us forever. There is no other alarm clock quite like the howler monkeys and macaws above you in the trees in the mornings. Also, the pool was SUPER clutch. After a day out in the jungle hiking around and exploring or walking the beach and climbing the rocks, dodging all the crabs along the shoreline up to Pan Dulce, the pool was the perfect way to unwind. Sitting, eating, reading a book with it dumping rain and seeing the lightning light up the jungle at night was pretty awesome too.
All in all, we had an awesome trip, so many good memories. Oscar was beyond gracious and helpful in his hospitality and making sure we had our needs taken care of. The property is amazing for those wanting to experience the authentic jungle atmosphere. The place makes you forget about the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It forces you to put your phone down so you truly can appreciate the beauty surrounding you and will leave you with memories and stories that will last a lifetime
Thank you Oscar! Thank you John!
We'll call it 4.75 stars. We would have rated 5 stars except the instant hot water heater was not working, so we had a week of cold showers. With it being hot, I found that rather refreshing, my wife, not so much. :) Other than that, incredible! This is not your typical resort experience. This is an authentic, by the ocean, in the beautiful jungle, totally private, constant wildlife, off the grid, open air experience. Just can't express how amazing the wildlife is! Oscar, our caretaker, was incredible, often sharing produce he gathered right there on the property. The personal pool was so refreshing and was used as much as sitting by the ocean. Even though the house is open, it was very clean, well kept, and free of bugs (which still amazes us)! We were there Feb 16-23, so maybe it was the time of year? However, not a single mosquito was seen (or felt) the entire week. The nearby restaurant was excellent and is a recommended visit especially on Friday nights (local artisans set up a market there with homemade articles, food, etc.) Recommend flying from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez. It's only a 50 minute flight and the house is about a half hour from the PJ airport. If renting a car, you MUST rent a 4X4! Trust me, I thought the local Alamo rep was taking us for a ride when he laughed at our "economy car" that we had reserved. He was not. You drive through a small creek getting to the house and that is very common when driving to Carate Beach or on other jungle/mountain roads. We wish we could have remembered a little more Spanish from our school days, but everyone we met was very kind and gracious. All in all, just an incredible stay in a natural paradise!
So glad you got to experience this wonderful spot.
THe dry season is best for mosquitos. Although, most months there is little problem. And yes, Oscar is a true gem, adding to the visit for any of our guests. Come back any time!
PS Sorry the hot water wasn't working. I think we just bought a new one.
Off grid jungle living, immersed in wildlife. Open air concept , steamy, and sticky
The house is basic, but well equipped kitchen. Beds uncomfortable, we slept upstairs and a pervasive sewage smell was present until we figure that it was coming from the sink, and the plug was needed to stop the smell. wonderful to awaken to the sounds of the jungle, birds and monkeys. My beef is with the extra charges, which were numerous.
As we were unable to flush toilet paper due to the septic system (understandable), the garbage can in the bathroom was not emptied and became fragrant. We were not sure if we could drink the tap water, and we ran out of jugged water, we asked for more water. But it was not provided. Overall we enjoyed our time there and explored the area
Thank you for your review Fiona. It was helpful in pointing out issue of an odor from the sink, that had never been stated before, and I will look into it. Nor has anyone complained about the beds as they are quite new. As to the filtered bottle water, I am surprised that it was not refilled for you, and will look into that as well.
I am not sure what extra charges you refer to, other than the $30 cleaning every three days, which most guests appreciate. A charge of $20 per person beyond the four person occupancy base rate, seems fair and reasonable.
I understand that VRBO adds their own service fee on top, as well as an optional and refundable damage insurance. I understand that may seem to be more than what you expectedd to pay, but that is how the system works.
All in all, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay, and thank you again for being our guest and for your constructive feedback.
John Shurtz, owner.
Amazing place - best part of our trip!
Staying here was a truly amazing jungle experience from start to finish! Everything was exactly as it was described, and John did a great job of answering all our questions beforehand since we were traveling with a 6 and 9 year old and wanted to be sure we knew what we were getting into. We spent a total of 8 days in the Osa Peninsula, and this place was far and away the best for wildlife viewing. Each day we couldn't get over all the monkeys, birds, butterflies, crabs, leaf-cutter ants, lizards and even a sloth that we saw and heard - so much to see and discover. But, what made it even more special was having such a warm and welcoming local guide to help us out, show us around and make us feel at home. Oscar made things absolutely perfect. We would highly recommend this property to anyone!
What a unique place in the world - this was our second trip to the Osa and we saw even more animals than the first time. The monkeys travelling in the tree bridge over the house were amazing to watch; saw an anteater on the property, turkeys, macaws, a toucan, a boa constrictor, dart frogs on the waterfall hike. The little pool was a haven. The house had what we needed and expected. Nice to have Martina's in close walking distance. Oscar the caretaker is a gem and was incredibly helpful in so many ways. He helped us hire a boat in the gulf and we saw pods of dolphins swimming in the bow wake, and Jim caught dorado, tuna, and rooster fish - terrific experiences. We love the still remote feel of the area - if creek and river crossings are not your thing, stay home! Tempting to encourage people to stay away :) We hope the area never changes and will be back again soon!
Cindy and Jim
Glad you guys had such a great time!
And yes, the animal life is over the top, literally.
Come back any time, it was great having you as guests.
At home in the jungle
Our party of six (four adults, two high school-age kids) stayed happily at Finca Sombrero y Camisas for three nights in mid April (toward the end of dry season). We would have stayed longer if our schedules permitted. The big draw of Osa is wildlife, and we found that we didn't have to go looking - it came to us in many forms: all four monkey species, a sloth, macaws, parrots, parakeets, kites, hummers, and many other birds, iguanas, basilisks, an armadillo that seemed even more surprised to see us than we him, a wooly opossum, more crabs than could possibly be enumerated, and much more. The beach is just a stone's throw away - it's not really a swimming beach, but it is a short walk to good swimming. The pool is small but perfect for a quick cooling dip. We cooked our own meals mostly, but a good restaurant is next door and Oscar the caretaker can arrange groceries as well as transport and guided outings. The feel and facilities are rustic but functional. The surroundings make them luxurious. If you can handle heat and humidity, and 4:30 am monkey choruses, you will have a fine experience. If not, you might want to investigate a different part of the country.
Glad for you and your family to have had the experience. It's truly a wildlife paradise, where you are guaranteed to see monkeys, scarlet macaws, snf thr many animals you noted. The rain just came this week after a long hot dry season. So temperatures cool a bit from here on into the green season.
Come back for a longer stay next time!
