A beautiful, rustic getaway with all necessary amenities
The Schoolhouse provided the perfect access to Yellowstone for my wife and I during our anniversary trip and was a great value.
LOCATION: couldn't ask for better access to Yellowstone NPS. The property is a 15-20 min drive along the gorgeous Yellowstone River from nearby Gardiner, which sits right at the north entrance of Yellowstone. From the highway, it is a 6-9 minute drive on a dirt/gravel road to the ranch. The road is well-maintained allowing adequate access for most types of vehicles. No cell phone service, which we appreciated!
PROPERTY: the schoolhouse is not remote or isolated; it is perched on a hill within view of the owners' residence and an adjacent rental cabin. The schoolhouse has typical kitchen appliances, including a small fridge. The kitchen and bathroom are fully stocked (plenty of towels, soaps, cleaning supplies, trash bags, etc.) and the owners are accessible if anything else is needed. They also have bear spray to borrow! The schoolhouse was clean, well-appointed, and nicely decorated with a schoolhouse theme. Plenty of room for two adults and could still house a couple of kids, though space would be tight. The views on the ranch (and Gardiner and Yellowstone) are simply breathtaking; probably the most beautiful part of the USA. The books in the cabin that the owners have put together are beautiful and provide an amazing history of the ranch and schoolhouse.
ACTIVITIES: due to my wife being pregnant, we didn't participate in any of the activities (horseback riding, ziplining, etc.), but they looked like a good time!
GARDINER, MT: a small western town with plenty of places to eat and a nice grocery store. Prices are a little higher than most places due to the remote location and it being a tourist area. There are a few gift shops, western shops, and a couple of ice cream shops to wander through at the end of the day. None of the restaurants really had especially amazing food, but no bad experiences for us and everyone is super-nice. Our favorites were Yellowstone Pizza Company and Iron Horse Bar & Grill (get the elk nachos). We had cell phone service in Gardiner (AT&T).
OWNERS: the owners were always available and very friendly. We were able to chat with Stacy one evening and she provided even more color to ranch life, the area, and her family's history on the property.
Overall, a great stay and we won't hesitate to come back when we have the chance!
Beautiful place to hang out and decompress! Loved it! Super charming. Will be back!
The 1916 Schoolhouse was everything we hoped for and more. Yes, it is off the beaten path, but that is what we were looking for. The access to YNP was great, views were spectacular (elk and deer right out our front door) mountain horseback trail ride was unforgettable! We definitely recommend this for anyone wanting to get away, or for a place to stay when visiting Yellowstone.
There's really no other words to describe our enthusiasm. We loved it here! Perfect getaway for those looking to get off the grid for a little while. Easy access to Yellowstone, but the area around the Schoolhouse is beautiful enough to explore on it's own.
Little peice of heaven
Stacey and Rob, has such a unique experience to offer travelers. We had such an enjoyable, relaxing two night stay. One of most best aspects of the stay, is there is no cell or wifi service. We were able to unplug and actually relax.
Could not be happier with the whole experience.
The magic of silence
For some odd reason we expected WiFi during our stay at the historic schoolhouse cabin on a remote hillside ...but after getting through the first challenging hours without cell service, TV and Internet, we started to love of just BEING there.
