Black mold and overcharging credit card
First “friendly rentals” contacted me outside VRBO and requested a payment on a separate site. I instantly was worried about a scam and contacted vrbo, who assured me they never have problems with them and that it was ok after giving my credit card to vrbo & also give it directly to the rental agency.
When I submitted the payment it almost doubled to add my friend to the room (from xx CAD per night to 2x that) which also raised an eyebrow but I figured if that’s how it works then that’s how it works.
This was a short notice trip so amidst packing & flying out I got an email confirming that I had paid in Euro instead, I tried to quickly call but couldn’t get through and figured I would deal with it at check in as it’s clearly a large error. I also double checked the price of the room on vrbo and it indeed says xxCAD per night.
On my way from the airport I again checked the sight and it now says 2% more per night so I take a screen shot of it before it changes further. I show them at friendly rentals, they also think it’s weird ( in the mean time my friend has become ill so it is only me staying so should technically drop back down to the xxCad/night) but they must speak to management. So they do, I show them my screen shot etc.
They then tell me there’s nothing they can do about it because I didn’t call at the time when it happened (even though I hadn’t seen it at the time and after I did see it in the email I couldn’t get through)
So they give me the keys and tell me it’s in the 3rd floor of an apartment complex. After many phone calls and carrying heavy luggage up and Down the broken stairs unable to get the key to work the woman from friendly hangs up on me after telling me several times that the 1st floor is the premier floor then to count after that which would bring me to the 4th floor but eventually after trial and error I find it in the 5th floor. (Which I later realized it says in the advert but clearly friendly rentals doesn't know anything about their complexes.
I walk in to the smell of mould and mildew. I open the windows as at first glance it doesn’t seem dirty.
A couple hours later I go to shower and find black mould everywhere. I immediately email customer service and they told me that’s normal.... so I email them an article on black mold. they respond that it’s cleaned by a housekeeper so that black mould is ok and unless I have symptoms of respiratory distress and get a dr note they won’t help or move me.
great location, great price
a great little apartment in a fantastic location.
it's an older, smaller apartment - but what isn't in the Born district.. besides, i knew we'd be spending all of our time out anyway.
and it's a walk up - so be ready for the stairs - but that's good to work off all the calories from the fantastic food - just steps from the front door/landing
(there's a great coffee/pastry shop 6 feet from the front door, and Mercat Princesa is about 50 feet away - awesome food!)
anyway - if you go knowing it's old, a walk up and small - and inexpensive by Born District standards - then you may find as we did - it all fits
plus, it's high and back, so you don't hear the noise of the late night revelers...
end of the day, all said and done ... i give it four stars
