Amazing historic property renovated to the highest standard. We felt privileged to stay here.
Stunning property retaining a wealth of period features but with all modern facilities. The property is spacious and immaculately presented, well equipped and very comfortable.
All open plan on the ground floor, upstairs the main room is a large bed chamber, with a separate twin room. There is a family bathroom with bath and separate shower. A second toilet is adjacent to the bed chamber, which has its own bath and sink. It was tricky to contain the dogs in the kitchen at night, but I didn't think to ask if a baby gate was available.
There's no TV here but the wifi is good. Small garden to the front and a private decked area to the rear. We were concerned about parking in the public carpark but we needn't have worried as it was absolutely fine and only about one minute's walk, adjacent to Cae Ddol park. The free pass lets you park in a number of long stay carparks throughout Denbighshire. The park is lovely and has a play area for small children, a skate park, fitness equipment and the river runs through it.
Staying at Porth y Dwr you're right in the town so there is a wide range of shops, supermarkets, restaurants, take-aways and pubs within easy walking distance (but uphill !). It is a very friendly place with a lot of Welsh speakers (if you fancy learning I can recommend a website called Say Something in Welsh) so I got to have my first conversation in Welsh with a lovely 82 year old guy we got chatting to in the Wine Vaults. There's plenty of fine dining in the town; we only tried "Small Plates" which has a Mediterranean theme and is a bit like a tapas bar. Only open Thurs-Sat and you're best to book - excellent food and very friendly. At the other end of the price spectrum, the Castle Hotel (in the Square, not the actual castle) is a Wetherspoons so good food at a really good price and it has a fantastic beer garden.
Nearby, Llangollen is wonderful (and you can park for free at the Pavillion with the free pass and walk along the canal into town). Snowdonia is nearby of course, but the best day out for me was a trip to Colwyn Bay (beautiful bay, sandy beach part of which is dog friendly (north of main beach), lots of cheap parking on the promenade) and then a drive up the cliffs to Great Orme country park. There's a £3.50 toll which includes parking at the summit (shops, cafe, cable car, tram). You can walk for miles and the views are absolutely stunning.
In summary, house perfect, town perfect. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences of staying at Porth y Dŵr, and the recommendations for days out, good places to eat and so on. It is great to know you found everything you needed (almost), and enjoyed your stay.
The secretaris house
Oude geklasseerde woning. Gezellige haard. Goede locatie om van daar uit de streek te verkennen.
Thank you for both of your kind reviews, and I am very happy that you enjoyed your stay at Porth y Dwr
